Discuss cars and auto insurance, and that can lead to discussing other kinds of insurance: Homeowners, life, etc. Discuss their monthly bills occasionally: Water, gas, electric, cable and their charge accounts and credit cards. Take the kids into their bank and discuss the bank and what it does and what it doesn't do.

Tyler: That's great advice, Erlend. What do you feel sets "Rich by Choice" apart from the many other books about money out there, especially those by such well-known personalities as Suze Orman?

Erlend: Money is a number: 14 cents, $1.50, $2,000, $1,000,000.

a. My book has numbers, charts and tables, all the numbers you need to make your situation work.

b. Suze Orman has no numbers; neither do most of the other books that are available.

c. My books have true stories and practical illustrations that show how money works and how it will work for you.

Tyler: I understand your book has a seven-step plan to wealth. Would you tell us what those seven steps are?

The Seven Steps are:

1. Cash reserve

2. Insurance

3. Fixed income savings

4. Growth investments

5. Tax planning

6. Retirement planning

7. Estate planning

Tyler: In "Rich by Choice" you talk about how much insurance a person needs and which ones are essential. Would you give us a summary of your opinions on insurance?

Erlend: If you own a car in California and other states, you must have auto insurance. If you own a home, get homeowners insurance. Your home is a huge asset and it deserves protection. If you have financial dependents, parents, kids, others, you need life insurance to protect their income stream.

Tyler: Are there certain kinds of life insurance you wouldn't recommend? Can a person have too much insurance? How much is enough?

Erlend: Not everybody needs life insurance. If no one is dependent on you for their income and financial needs, you don't need life insurance.

In a typical family situation, the working parent or parents should have enough life insurance to provide total income for the family for two to five years if they die prematurely. This should be whole life or universal life. Plan to keep these policies for your lifetime. You pay the premium monthly or annually as long as you have the policy, or you can arrange to have the policy paid up at age 65 or some other age. These policies build cash value inside the policy as long as you make the payments, and this cash value build-up after 20 or 30 or 40 years can provide extra income for you in your retirement.

Other common types of life insurance are term life and variable universal life. Variable universal life invests some of your premium payments into various types of mutual funds, instead of the guaranteed fixed investment in the regular universal life and whole life policies. These mutual fund investments in the variable life policies can go up or down so there is considerable risk to the cash value portion of these policies. The monthly or annual premium or cost of variable life is much more than universal or whole life.

Term life insurance is issued for a specific term of years, usually 5-10 or 20 years. At the end of the term, the policy lapses, ends, or you can renew it based on your age then, at a much higher cost. Term life has no cash value build-up and is therefore much cheaper than the other policies.

Because of the great differences in these policies, it would be good to discuss your need for life insurance and get quotes from agents at three different companies.

Tyler: Thanks, Erlend. You certainly know about life insurance. How about real estate? We hear so much today about the importance of investing in it. How important do you think real estate is to gaining wealth and financial independence, and what would you say is the next best thing to do for people who are not interested in buying and selling properties?

Erlend: Real estate works, but it takes some cash and steady effort on your part. You must rent out the property, collect the rent, pay the property taxes, make repairs, etc. Real estate prices also run in cycles; the prices go up and down. They are high now. If you have the cash, the time and the skill, real estate works.

Mutual funds are much simpler:

a. Pick good funds, with 10-12% annual growth over the last 3 - 5 -10 years.

b. Make steady investments every paycheck.

c. Watch the results grow.

Tyler: What about U.S. Savings Bonds? Lots of people buy U.S. Savings Bonds regularly through their paychecks or they give them as gifts or save them to use for their children's education. Do you feel U.S. Savings Bonds are a good investment?

Erlend: U.S. Savings Bonds are the safest investment in the world. They are backed by the full faith and credit of the U.S. Treasury. In the Seven Step process, they fit on Step 3, fixed income savings. The problem with them is they are (1) long term, 20 or 30 years, so you could lose money if you had to cash them in early, and (2) they only pay 4-5-6%. Good long-term investments should pay 8-10-12% or more. You can now buy most investments regularly through your bank or payroll.

Tyler: Which do you feel is more important, buying a home and then using your extra money to pay off the mortgage as quickly as possible, or to take that extra money and invest it?

Erlend: Let the mortgage run. It has tax benefits. Put all available income into tax qualified retirement plans: IRA, 401-K, 403-B, 457, etc. When you are investing the max in them, then make extra mortgage payments.

Tyler: What is the first thing you would suggest a person do to start the journey toward being rich?

Erlend: The first thing each person must do when they realize or decide that they want to be RICH is to stop and examine their present financial situation and think about their future situation and what they want it to be. This does not have to be done in detail down to the last dollar, but just enough to get a sense of where they are going. They need to know that it is absolutely possible to get there.

Knowing what you want to do and knowing that it is possible are the first step. Then you do it.

Tyler: Erlend, if people only learned one thing from your book, what do you hope it would be?

Erlend: That they can become rich, because anybody can, and therefore, that they will start NOW.

Tyler: Thanks so much, Erlend. The first step is to have it clear in your mind what subject you want your ebook to be on. If you are not sure as to the subject then have a read of my article on finding niche markets.

Now what we're going to do is use other peoples' hard work to create our very own unique eBook. Sounds too good to be true doesn't it. However this is a very real opportunity that the top gun ebook publishers use time and time again to create products in lightning quick time.

We're going to use the content from the best of them to create ebooks. You see web site owners write articles and submit them to article directories so that they get free publicity for their sites. At the end of each article is a link back to their web site with a bit of information about their site for example. These site owners want people to take that article and market it to people so they get visitors to their site without spending a dime on marketing. This is perfect for savvy entrepreneurs just like you.

You see what we can do at go articles.com is type in a niche in the search bar at the top right (make sure it's on "article content" rather than search by author). Type in your niche market. So for example type in "dogs". You'll get thousands of result related to what you have searched for. Now what I want you to do is simply go through the results finding at least seventy quality articles related to the dog market and copy and paste them into word or some kind of word processing application.

As I've said make sure they are quality articles. If you create an ebook using rubbish you'll just get a sky high refund rate and it will all be a pointless exercise. Do it right from the off and you'll set yourself up for success.

If you can, try and tie all the articles together in one sub niche. For example a sub niche of dogs might be training your dog. So you could find articles on stopping your dog from barking at night, toilet training that kind of thing. Use a bit of imagination when using this method.

Email Article Authors

You don't want to use any articles without the author's permission. Remember the majority of articles will have been submitted so the author can get visitors to their site without spending a dime. However you never want to breach any copyright laws. To avoid this email the authors of each article. Explain to them that you are creating an ebook aimed at their niche market. You'd love to include their article in your book and you'll include a link back to their site and information about them. Also ask them if they have any other articles you could include.

You can expect around seventy percent of authors you contact to be delighted you're going to include their article in your book. Then all you need to do is discard the articles from authors who you haven't heard from or who won't let you use their article.

Put the articles in an order that makes sense and create a contents page. Use the titles of the articles as contents topics. You could even create chapters aimed at solving certain problems people in your niche have. All articles would make up separate chapters.

Add a title and a small copyright section so people know that this product is unique to you and your business. Also point out that people don't have the rights to resell it.

Finally write a short introduction and conclusion. These only need to be a few paragraphs each. Tell people what they can expect to learn and make sure you sign off using your name. Instantly you will establish yourself as an expert. You can also link to your back end products at the end of the book to increase your sales.

Finally you need to turn it into an ebook to sell. Don't worry it won't cost you a dime. Resale Rights Products - Where to Find Your Resale License

Selling eBooks and software with Resale Rights is an effective and inexpensive way to build your business.

It's important though to be ethical in your business practices and respect the terms of the resale rights license that comes with the product.

While that may sound easy, in practice finding and abiding by the terms of your license can be frustrating and confusing.

To Abide by Your Resale Rights License First You Have to Find It Some authors make respecting the terms of the Resale Rights license attached to their product quite a chore right from the start by making the license difficult to find. If you've had trouble just locating your license here are some places to look.

Most Resale Rights products come packaged in a .zip file. Once you have extracted the contents of the file look for a .txt file or a .pdf file that does not seem to belong to the actual product. This file could be named all most anything but usually it will be called something like "license" or "terms".

Sometimes the author has shortened a longer term by using only the first letters to form the file name. Master Resale Rights License becomes MRRL.txt. Check anything that looks out of place.

If you can't find a file that contains the license terms try looking for them in the product itself. Look closely at the first few pages. The actual terms might be only a very short sentence that is easily missed.

If you still can't find the license and the product comes with a sales page, try looking there. The information you are so diligently seeking may be buried in the sales copy.

On rare occasions there simply isn't any license information. Then your only recourse is to contact the author. One possible exception is if the product is "Brandable" and includes branding software. If the author has gone to the trouble to include a branding script it seems safe to assume that he or she wants the product to be distributed.

If you have any doubts about the author's intentions then it is best to contact him or her and keep the product off the market until the situation has been clarified.

Product Creation - Live Example of Writing a 100 Page Ebook IV

You know, if you end up with 12 chapters and some chapters have a few more than ten because you really need it. You know, maybe ten different ways to do weight loss, but exercises, you might have 25. Equipment, I don't know how you would cover that, but maybe you have 12. My guess is you're going to end up with 150 to 200 pages.

I know it's daunting and for anybody else, for everybody else that's raised their hand and you know said, 'product creation is something where I struggle a little bit.' This may be daunting, but break it down to these individual articles. Just about everybody on this call has written articles, you've written a few. Yes, it takes discipline, yes it takes sitting down at the computer and simply doing it. And, I know that sometimes you'll run into writer's block, but if you'll take one afternoon and brainstorm exactly the same way that Cheryl and I have just been doing to come up with these chapters, and then these things that you know about each of these topics in the chapter, you can come up with, you can outline an entire book in an afternoon.

Then, to write that book, all you've got to do is start filling in the blanks. Write one article, three or four hundred pages, for every single topic that you've created. And you don't have to start at the beginning. You can start anywhere in the middle of it. And you just keep filling it up. Every day you sit down and you write ten pages. Or you write five pages or whatever it it. It doesn't have to be perfect the first time you write it.

After you've written it, you read through it and you fix it. So, this could be your $50 product, perhaps? Maybe a hundred dollar product if you can add in a CD or something, that you personally talk to people maybe this could be a hundred dollar product. I don't know. I don't know the natural health market. So, this product could be priced at somewhere between fifty and a hundred dollars.

Maybe with a CD or some other added value. To create your initial ten dollar product, all you've got to do is take one of those ten chapters and basically make that your ten dollar product. Doesn't have to be the exact same chapter. It doesn't have to be an excerpt, so to speak, although it could be. You could use the same concept though and take your ten... You know, take one of your ten topics and write ten or fifteen good articles about that topic. Write another five or ten pages or topics on things that help people do that one topic better.

There is an old standard out in the writing world: "Write what you know".

This is a very good guide, and should provide a vast array of subject matter. However, it may appear limiting to some people, for two reasons. A person may consider their experiences narrow or uninteresting, and thus find it difficult to draw out an appealing article idea. The second reason is when a person feels they've exhausted all topics with which they are familiar. In truth, writing what you know is the best place to start, and essential if one is to present an accurate and informative article.

Every person holds countless life experiences. No matter how unexciting we believe our life to be, each experience is unique and of interest to someone else. A single, everyday event can be developed into a multitude of articles, each slanted toward a different audience.

Let's take a simple, outwardly mundane example, such as re-painting the exterior of a house. Just a handful of possible ideas include: Painting on a budget, How to extend the life of a paint brush, Choosing colours, Hiring professional painters, Spray versus brush – what is best? Ideas are numerous. Brain storming potential titles will often generate many more article ideas than one would wish to write, and that is good news for any freelance writer. To increase the idea pool even further, thinking about the various reader groups to which a subject may relate also helps. It is possible to write individual articles on the same subject, angled differently for each market.

Certainly, a writer should write about the things they know, but possibilities vary far beyond the information and skills currently held. Exhausting all avenues in your personal experience does not equate to the end of marketable ideas. When it comes to writing about something you do not have knowledge of – then go get it. Driving a race car may be far from the world of a single, mother-of-two, but it does not have to remain so.

Gaining the new experience necessary to liven up your knowledge base might be as easy as researching the topic at the local library. What is Duplicate Content Part II

What does this mean to you? You should not deliberately create multiple versions of the same content, changing only the keywords. This will be detected, and unless the text is also relevant to the keywords used, the search engine will list only one of your pages, or perhaps even none of them. If you are involved in affiliate marketing, you should also be careful of copying content provided by the merchant directly to a web page. You can be almost certain that many others have done the same.

Be careful of scraped content, such as scraped article packs that are sold online. This content has been scraped from blogs and article directories, and the same content can be used on hundreds of other web pages. Any page with scraped content is liable to be filtered by duplicate content filters.

Article marketing is popular, but people tend to submit the same articles to a number of different directories. What this means is that each directory will have the same content in its database of articles. Initially the same article has a chance of being listed several times in an index, but over time, these will be filtered until there is only one. The major benefit of submitted articles, therefore, is through their access by visitors to these directories and who use the search boxes to seek articles using specific keywords, rather than through their search engine listings.

In some cases, the search engine might not be able to determine the source of the original article and filter out the writer's web page. This is why you should never use a submitted article on your own website, unless it is a rewritten version.

Google refers to 'substantive blocks of content', but does not qualify what is meant by that. It might be possible to overcome the duplicate filter by rewriting parts of a web page or article, but if you don't known by how much you must do it, it is probably as well just rewriting the whole thing.

Nothing Down for the 2000's - A Book Review

"Nothing Down for the 2000's" is the most recent version of Robert Allen's first successful book, "Nothing Down," published in 1980. In 1990 he revised the edition and published "Nothing Down for the 90's." Most recently, Allen co-authored "Nothing Down for Women" with Karen Nelson Bell.

More than one million copies of "Nothing Down" were published, and the book stayed on the New York Times bestseller list for 46 weeks. It became the most successful real estate investment book in history and became the book that every investor wished he had written.

In the book's introduction Allen states, "Real estate is the simplest, easiest, safest, shortest route to financial freedom." However, after reading the book, I don't feel that Allen's short statement quite accurately describes the nature of creating financial freedom through real estate investments. I came away with the feeling that while investing in real estate is quite within my resources and abilities, it really requires a large amount of dedication to learning, attention to detail and creativity, commitment to reducing risk, and patience.

Allen's book begins by discussing the financial rewards from successfully investing in real estate. He makes a compelling case that achieving financial freedom through real estate investing is a desirable and achievable goal.

Next, Allen talks about the proper attitudes and purposes that a successful investor must have. He presents several interactive activities that allow the reader to determine whether they have the proper mindset and the compelling reasons that will allow them to become a successful investor. This section gives the reader a good opportunity to decide whether the rest of the book will be of value to them.

Allen's real estate investment system consists of two basic parts, finding a good real estate deal and funding the deal. The remainder of the book is full of good information about finding and funding.

The next few chapters discuss sources for finding candidate deals and how to rate the deals. Allen's treatment of the subject is thorough enough that most readers will be surprised by how many sources of real estate deals there are. Not all candidate deals are worth going after, however, and Allen presents a good, common sense rating system that he has used for many years and which has produced many profitable transactions. Allen also talks about building a team of people who can help an investor find good deals.

The final section of the book, which seems to be the longest section, covers the principles of funding the deal. In this case, the book covers types of funding that result in the buyer not having to put down money of their own. After all, that is the main appeal of the book, that an investor can control significant amounts of real estate without having to use their own money. As with the section about finding deals, this section about funding reveals a surprisingly large number of strategies to negotiate and complete the deal without having the buyer put down money of their own.

Allen concludes his book with a discussion of the fears that may prevent a person from becoming a successful real estate investor. He lists eight major fears and talks about ways to overcome each of them. He then closes the book by saying, "I firmly believe that the book you now hold in your hand can give you the tools you need . . . my very own, proven strategies for truly Creating Wealth with Real Estate."

Resale Rights For Ebooks - Creating High Resale Prices

Have you ever paid a high price for resale rights for ebooks only to see someone reselling them the next week for $1 each on eBay?

Most resellers are lazy. They buy resale rights for ebooks then turn around and resell the ebooks just as they bought them -- except usually for less money because it's quick and easy.

Suppose you have to pay $47 for the resale rights on a hot new ebook. You immediately upload it to your website and shoot an email to your list, "Stop! Don't pay $47... get it today for just $7!"

If you sell 7 copies or more, you've made a profit and you didn't have to do much work. Chances are you will at least double or triple your money, even with a relatively small list.

But there are two problems with that:

1. Unless you are selling resale rights for ebooks to build your list, you have to resell an awful lot of $7 ebooks to make a living.

2. You've just made it difficult for anyone else to sell the resale rights for that ebook for more than $7.

Just because other people are selling resale rights for ebooks for a pittance doesn't mean you have to be stuck with resale rights for ebooks you could only sell on eBay for $1.

Here are three creative ways to maintain or even tremendously increase the value of resale rights for ebooks you purchase:

Repackaging Resale Rights For Ebooks

Sometimes resale rights for ebooks are sold for a single ebook, sometimes you get a package. But when you do get a resale rights package, often there wasn't a whole lot of thought that went into deciding what products to put in the package. If the resale rights license allows, you can repackage it with different products to create a themed product.

Maybe last week you picked up a resale rights package that had an ebook about dog training. Then you remember that a resale rights membership you joined has a great looking ebook with private label rights about making doggie treats. Think that dog owners might want to make some nice treats to reward their dog as they are training them? That's probably a much better match than the ebook about copywriting that originally came packaged with the dog training ebook!

On the other hand, you just picked up some nice Web graphics with resale rights. That sure would go better with the copywriting ebook! Then you remember you also have a sales letter generator with software resale rights. You also just read an article about how Web 2.0 is the coming thing.

You spend about half an hour surfing and learning more about Web 2.0. Then you log into your favorite resale rights membership site and discover they have resale rights for ebooks about MySpace, YouTube, and Squidoo. You dust off your copy of Photoshop, download an ecover action script from the resale rights membership site, and spend the afternoon creating some new graphics for your hot new products, "The Web 2.0 Web Master Pack" and the "How To Train Your Dog But Still Treat Your Best Friend Right" package. You set the price at $97 for the Web 2.0 package and $27 for the dog training package.

Recreating Resale Rights Products

Sometimes you don't just get resale rights for ebooks. Sometimes you can also can get private label rights. Repackaging works great, but wouldn't it even be more effective if at least one of the products in the package was only available through you?

You're in luck. You check the license for that copywriting ebook and realize you have unrestricted private label rights. You can claim authorship, modify the content in any way you want, or do just about anything with it. Looking at the copywriting ebook, you realize it's a great ebook on copywriting, but it really doesn't cover creating sales pages for the Web. You add some content and some screenshot graphics to help illustrate.

Then you download a free trial of Camtasia and spend a couple hours creating several videos on how to use the Web graphics and sales page generator, and how to use MySpace, YouTube, and Squidoo. And you change the price to $197.

Repurposing Resale Rights Products

Interview with Joe Redden Tigan - author of "Waggle"

Today, Juanita Watson of Reader Views talks with Joe Redden Tigan about his humorous, yet thought-provoking sports novel "Waggle."

Joe Redden Tigan was born in DeKalb, IL, the youngest of seven children. Shortly after he was born, the family relocated to California, and a decade later returned to northern Illinois, settling in St. Charles, a western suburb of Chicago. After attending several colleges that included University of St. Francis, Northern Illinois University, and University of Copehagen, Denmark, Tigan eventually graduated with a B.A. degree from the University of Massachusetts in Amherst. He focused on literature and journalism, and later attended Illinois State University, where he received a fellowship to study creative writing in the graduate Creative Writing Program. At that time, the creative writing faculty at ISU included David Foster Wallace, Curtis White, and C.S. Giscombe. Tigan has had poetry published in "The High Plains Literary Review" and other literary journals. He currently lives in Chicagoland.

Juanita: Welcome to Reader Views Joe, and thanks for the opportunity to talk about your stunning first novel "Waggle." What's your background with the sport of golf?

Joe: Thank you, Juanita. I appreciate the opportunity as well. Golf has been part of my life for a very long time. Highlights include my time as a caddy at St. Charles Country Club in the western suburbs of Chicago, being selected to caddy in the Western Open during that time in high school, working on the greenskeeping crew at the local 9-hole municipal course during summers home from college, and anytime spent playing, of course. I can usually keep my handicap in single digits, and I actually came pretty close to winning the St. Charles city tournament not too long ago.

Juanita: Joe, you've written poetry for years. Would you tell us about your writing history, and why you decided to pen your first novel?

Joe: My writing history has a lot of stops and starts, and I think that "Waggle" was a long-awaited personal response to that. I would receive praise for some of my writing at various points in my life, after which I would stop writing for like 5 years. Why I would do that I have no idea, nor do I really want to find out. In other words, I would have some poetry published in a literary journal then I wouldn't write for a long time, or I would receive a fellowship to study in a graduate creative writing program then leave after a year and not write for a long time, etc. "Waggle" kind of said "put up or shut up" to me in that haunting way that only inner monologues about novel ideas can have.

Juanita: What inspired this particular story?

Joe: First and foremost, a lot of time spent listening to conversations while playing golf. That was already in the data banks when I started writing the book. After that, I think I just finally hit a point in my life where I wanted my writing to say something to me and to my community.

Juanita: What happens in "Waggle"?

Joe: I hope "Waggle" conveys the feeling that maybe something has already happened, and that what transpires in the book is a reaction to what has happened. And what has happened is that a beautiful far western suburb of Chicago has been ravaged by commercial and residential real estate development, and the unbridled greed combined with the exploding population have finally hit real estate appraiser Conny Bromenn in a deep enough spot to where he may want to actually do something about it. Like get involved. He knows he can't go it alone though. His challenge is to convince his long-time friends and golfing buddies that they should join him in his quest to do things like: participate in preserving the environment, beat back commercialism, outfox governmental bureaucratic oppression, and learn how to play musical instruments, as just a few examples. Conny knows the only way he could get these guys to participate is if they lost a bet. And that's literally how he approaches getting their buy-in.

Juanita: Would you tell us more about your lead character Conny Bromenn?

Joe: Conny is, at 40, beginning to question not only where his life has been but also where it's going, and he's probably not super-enthusiastic about either, you could say. Like pretty much everybody else, his life has not turned out the way he thought it might. But a ridiculously beautiful day in Carlsburg, IL has injected him with newfound hope and enthusiasm. Conny is awash in pure-grade personal awareness, and he simply can't escape a mounting desire to make more out of his life, starting that day.

Juanita: How did you come up with him as a character? Did he evolve on his own through the writing process or did you have a definite idea of his progression?

Joe: I would say a little bit of both, but of all the characters in the book, Conny was probably the most pre-conceived. He obviously drives the book. I knew what I wanted him to be and I adhered to that preconception, but I also gave him room to expand. Truth be told, Conny originally developed from my own personal backlash to what seem to have become staple hero roles in fiction today—either an adolescent from a dysfunctional family who's really confused or a single woman living in the city and all the ensuing drug use and sexual escapades of both therein. I wanted to write a character or several characters who were truly adults.

As such, Conny carries the burden of being conscientious (at last), but he's also quite human. I knew I needed this in him from the very start, but when you ask how did I come up with him, all I can think about is how much he evolved naturally as I wrote him. The starting place for Conny is difficult to describe, because he wasn't born from a "spark" so to speak, but more from experiences over a long time.

Juanita: Joe, have you always been aware of the "bigger picture" or did you have a day/ event that catapulted your expanded awareness?

Joe: I think I've always been a big picture kind of guy. One of my early interests was to become a journalist so I could "see the world" and I developed that interest through high school and college by being editors of school newspapers. The plan was to be an observer of great note. However, somewhat conversely, I can remember the day I decided to write "Waggle" quite vividly, and that was a decision made in answer to stop being an observer and start becoming a player. I really can remember the day, but that day was the result of many years of writing and running.

Juanita: Who are Conny's golf mates? And, what real-life representation can you attribute to them?

Joe: Conny is lucky enough to form a foursome with Buck O'Royerson, Clark Sweet, and Tom Blair, the foursome making up three real estate appraisers and one regional mortgage sales director. And putting aside the theory that everything writers write is about the writer and his experiences, I have to say I was surprised by how little these guys—and anybody in the book, really—were related to real-life people I know. They have some broad strokes that could apply to just about anyone, which is by design of course. Buck is a gambling and alcohol addict; Sweet lies about his talents as a golfer; Tom Blair is affixed to a cell phone constantly. But they also have distinct personal idiosyncrasies, and this is where I was taken aback by how much stuff I could actually make up, because these personality traits are unrelated to anyone or anything I've ever known. And man, is that ever the fun part of the writing.

Juanita: Would you elaborate on the personal awareness theme in "Waggle," and the way the game of golf lends itself so well to this topic?

Joe: Golf is well known for its psychological requirements. The kind of focus required to play golf (well) is beyond any other sport, period. This is why golf lends itself so well to a story about four guys experiencing burgeoning personal awareness. They couldn't do that on a football field. Plus the fact that they're 40 years old. But what tends to get lost in the shuffle about golf in our ESPN2 age is that you're spending 4-5 hours walking close to 5 miles when you play 18 holes. Just physically speaking, this is going to induce the kind of deep, regulated breathing necessary for Zen-like meditation on life, which in turn leads to heightened personal awareness. I'm quite devoted to the topic of walking in the book and its incredible ability to provoke things like self-reflection and clearheadedness.

Juanita: Joe, do you think Conny is going through a mid-life crisis?

Joe: I'm one of those people that has a problem with that term. I was raised by a father who was born in 1918 and a mother who was born in 1922, so what I was taught to be an actual crisis was formed by people who spent their adolescent years in an economic depression we can't even imagine only to move into their young adulthood engulfed in a world war we can't even imagine, during all of which they still functioned quite well, so, by proxy, my definition of "crisis" tends to differ from a lot of my contemporaries. Discovering that your priorities have changed because you're maturing does not mean "crisis" to me. In "Waggle," I use the term "catharsis." That seems more appropriate.

That being said, I still wouldn't even use the contemporary application of the term "mid-life crisis" in reference to Conny because he's not going out and buying a red Corvette and trying to score with 19-year-olds or quitting his job with a secure income to run off and be a bartender at a resort in Cabo San Lucas, which, from what I've gathered, tends to be the normal kinds of psychological associations with the term. He's really not confused or wayward. Quite the opposite. In fact, he's so focused on this particular day that he's worried his friends might become concerned about his newfound clarity. Conny's not avoiding. He's pursuing. Well, at the very least, he's trying to avoid avoiding things anymore at this point in his life.

Juanita: For those readers who don't play golf, what does "waggle" mean?

Joe: I like the definition Reader Views reviewer Cherie Fisher found: "To make small movements of the club head back-and-forth at approach, prior to grounding the club…It can be a nervous habit, or it can be an intentional movement designed to help the golfer trigger the swing or achieve the tempo they are looking for." Achieving tempo. I like that, and tempo is a very important achievement for me as a writer.

Juanita: Why did you decide to bring the idea of social responsibility into the golf realm?

Joe: A round of golf, for me, has always had a way of clearing my head. In a way, the aforementioned definition of "waggle" could be construed as meaning a way of finding an almost Zen-like comfort level first, the swing away. This is the kind of meditation required to decide you will finally eschew your singular goal of making money and create new goals centered on community involvement and improvement. Triple-the-Pines Golf Course became a giant Zen garden for Conny and the guys, and greater community involvement (or any at all) was their revelation, I guess you could say.

Juanita: Joe, you bring the golf course into this story almost as if it is a character in itself. Would you comment?

Joe: Triple-the-Pines Golf Course is indeed a character in this book, and sometimes it's my favorite one. Each hole receives its own introduction, and in rather personal terms. I wanted to give the golf course a sort of ambition of its own, which is to break the ego of every golfer that treads upon it while clearing their heads via a good dose of fresh air, exercise, and camaraderie. The course is helping these guys make some pretty heavy decisions. I actually had a line in an early draft of the book that didn't make the final cut, but that I still like very much: (After cordial greetings on the 1st tee) "Triple-the-Pines is quickly relegated from a long-time friend and possible sleeping partner to a faithful minister and does so without question, though there are times guys have looked back at Triple-the-Pines after 18 holes to see its horizon fashioning a smirk at how breaking 80 was never even close to being broached that day." The golf course is a character, and with its own complexities.

Juanita: Joe, what are your thoughts on the listlessness of suburban life and affluent complacency?

Joe: The one thing I want to set straight is that, yes, this book certainly does allude to the oftentimes-vacuous nature of suburban consumerism. But that's really not what the book is about. We already kind of know that, you know? "Waggle" looks for solutions to this particular brand of lethargy, and hopefully in an entertaining way.

But in a more direct response to your question, the commonplace listlessness and complacency you can find in affluent suburbs flat out scares the hell out of me sometimes. I think it's because I absolutely love the suburbs, but I love the 1985 version of them. They're getting bulldozed hard and fast these days, and I know we need places to accommodate the growing population, but I can't help but think a lot of times there's got to be a better way. But those better ways aren't just going to happen. When I hear people complain about the state of affairs, then tell me they need to run out to Super Target real quick to get their shopping fix in before Dr. McDreamy comes on tonight, it flat out scares the hell out of me sometimes.

Juanita: Do you think that changes to this type of "suburban consumerism" will predominately come through an internal catalyst as Conny represents in your fictitious community?

Joe: Most definitely, Juanita. Great point. I firmly believe that change can only come from within; it starts with your self. Can you be prodded into doing something as monumental as sacrificing time with Dr. McDreamy to campaign for city council? It's unlikely without a pre-existing, intense individual desire. You can pass the homeless veteran begging for money on the Canal Street bridge in Chicago a thousand times and never give a damn about homelessness; you can be handed a thousand pamphlets about joining the organization trying to save a city landmark from being turned into a parking garage; you can be bombarded by doorhangers asking you to sign up for Habitat for Humanity. And God bless the volunteers that try to raise awareness. But let's be honest, it's going to take your own personal smothering of oddly fresh air, as Conny experiences on July 28, 2003, to finally get up the energy do something about it. That air representing some kind of awakening, obviously.

Juanita: Joe, there is quite a bit of humor in "Waggle." Would you comment on your writing style and the funny nature of your novel in the context of a male oriented personal discovery story?

Joe: Humor is imperative to human existence. I don't mean that figuratively. We need humor like we need air or water. We would literally die without it. To call anybody left standing without humor in the world "boring" would be a monumental understatement. I tend to want to communicate with people in a humorous fashion, especially in writing. For one thing, it's really challenging. So, the thought of telling a story about four real estate appraisers in Chicagoland during the real estate boom suddenly "finding" themselves requires humor. There's just no way around it. Putting that story on a golf course was just pure fun for me, and something I have an extensive background in. If something is both practiced AND fun for you, your writing process is going to be that much more enjoyable and successful. This is going to sound really cheesy, but I've always felt that the old axiom "write what you know" should really be "write what you love." Cheesy quotient pretty high on that one, I know.

Juanita: Fans of "Waggle" are full of praise and calling for a sequel. Do you have any plans to oblige?

Joe: I do. It's in the works as we speak.

Juanita: How was the experience of writing your first novel? What about in comparison to writing poetry?

Joe: Even though my book is humorous, the experience of writing it was not always fun, not by a long shot. Granted, there's also a very serious strain of "what the hell are we going to do about the state of the world these days" running through "Waggle." But writing a novel is quite different from writing poetry, at least for me, in that the spans of time spent sitting and writing are quite different. I can write one line to a poem and love it so much that I'm happy and done for the day and gone to play 9 holes. Novel writing can really suck the time right out of the air. You can spend 3 straight weeks holed up in an efficiency apartment outside of San Diego and emerge for groceries one day only to find that you're not relating very well to the people in the grocery store because you've been holed up in an efficiency apartment outside of San Diego writing fiction for 3 straight weeks. My poetry writing is rarely paced like that, if ever. However, I have to say my experience with poetry did feed my novel writing process more than I would have thought. I was surprised. And I'm talking pure mechanics here, as well as little things like word choice and tempo.

Juanita: Joe, what do your friends - in particular your male friends – think about your book?

Joe: I get quite a wide range of feedback. So far, it's been extremely positive and, boy, am I grateful. Very. But you know what's funny? Women tend to be the ones who will actually recite favorite lines back to me, and they're often lines I consider to be fairly submerged in the rest of the text. For example, I have a bit of a running thing where when a character has an intense reaction to something, it's precluded by what I call a "Christ-golfer" line. It could be along the lines of "Christ in a plaid pair of pants! Hit the ball already!" Women will say to me, "Christ in a pair of Foot-Joys, Tigan! That's a great book!" Guys don't do that nearly as much, which makes me hope to God that they're not living up to the statistic of women reading much more than men, and more smartly. Guys tend to comment on how the story has been laid out and like to kick around the broader topic of how the wager that is so pivotal to the book actually works. That kind of thing. Like maybe they leafed through it. I'm not making accusations here.

Juanita: Joe, how can readers find out about you and your book?

Joe: Thank you, Juanita. And I appreciate the kind words toward a new book. I love ebooks. I can download them instantly, they don't take up any space except on my hard drive, and often they are offered for a lower price than bound versions of the same book. However, one drawback to ebooks is that they can be harder to read than a book you can hold in your hand. As an ebook writer, you need to do everything you can to make your ebook "reader friendly" so that your readers actually read your ebook (and possibly click on those links which you so helpfully provided throughout). Here are seven ways to make your ebook reader friendly.

1) In an ebook that is read on a computer screen, you must give your readers' eyes a break. You can do this by using white space. Readers' eyes need to rest in the cool white oases you create on your pages. If the pages are too dense, your readers will quit reading as soon as their eyes begin to tire.

2) Use an easy-to-read design. Find a font that's easy on the eyes and stick to that font family. Using several different fonts will only tire your readers out before they've gotten past your introduction. Use at least one and a half line spacing and text large enough to be read easily on the computer screen, but small enough so that the whole page can be seen on the screen. You will have to experiment with this to find the right combination.

3) Write with a casual, conversational tone. Use the pronoun "you." Reader's respond to the feeling that you are having a conversation with them. Keep your style lively by breaking up the length and structure of your sentences. Sentences that are all the same length and structure tend to be a good cure for insomnia.

4) Keep your writing engaging with anecdotes, testimonials, photos, graphs, advice, and tips that keep your readers turning the pages. Sidebars are useful for related, additional information, and they break up the density of the page.

5) Make use of lists, both bulleted and numbered. This makes your information easy to absorb and gives the reader a mental break from dissecting your paragraphs one after the other.

6) Don't forget to run a spell and grammar check. Writers are judged by things as seemingly minor as correct spelling and punctuation. Readers think to themselves, "If this guy doesn't even know that "a lot" is two words, how can I be sure that he knows what he's talking about in this book?" Don't ruin a great book by misspelling common words (accidentally, exercise, receive) mixing up homonyms (affect/effect, its/it's, principal, principle), or stringing sentences together with commas.

7) Create a table of contents, an index, and a bibliography. Readers may want to refer back to something that they remember reading without scrolling through the whole book. They also may be interested in finding out more about your subject by reading your source material. Your bibliography can be a source of additional revenue for you if you provide clickable links that include your affiliate ID.

Doing all this may seem like a lot of trouble, but you benefit just as much as the reader does. If your readers read and like your ebook, they will click on your links, won't return it for a refund, and will consider buying future ebooks from you. They are earnest, they are committed and they are taking action on a regular basis. So

3. Your Customers. People who buy your products are obviously interested in what you do and some of them will most likely be in related fields. Find ways to engage your customers to find the ones that can increase your bottom line through joint-venturing.

4. Affiliate Partners. Affiliate partners can often turn into joint-venture partners.
An affiliate is someone who is already promoting your products and services which means that they have a market that is already interested in what you have to offer.
Some of them will be a natural fit and will move from promoting your products and services to working with you as a joint-venture partner.

5. Vendors. The vendors that you work with may know other people who are exactly the kind of people you are looking to joint venture with. You might even considering offering vendors a "hook-up fee" which will give them even more incentive to help you find the best joint-venture partners for you.

6. Trade Associations. Get to know the people who run your local trade associations and ask them which vendors they use. Then make a point to get to know these vendors. They can also be a good source for joint-venturing opportunities.

To write a good eBook on Health and Fitness you must first set the tone, not only in the first chapter but also with a good picture on the cover and/or the Title Page, as well. The Introduction, Acknowledgements and Forward must too set the tone. What tone do we set?

Well consider if you will that no one buys into the Superman Theory without the Kryptonite too. People liked the movie "Rocky" because it showed spirit, adversity and it brought out the character. I love settling down to a really good book. Actually, I love the whole process, from going to the bookshop or library, browsing the books on the shelves to choosing one with a catchy title and bringing the book home to read at my own leisure. So why recommend writing an e-book? Regular paper books have so many advantages. I can pick it up anytime I want to. I don't have to wait for the computer to be free, hope for a good internet connection, get a neckache trying to read it on-line... I can put a bookmark where I've stopped reading in a regular book, instead of scrolling up and down on the computer screen. I can't read an e-book wherever I want. Unless of course, I kill a few trees printing the entire book out in a larger font than it would otherwise have been in a regular book.
E-books mainly have words. Pictures take a long time to download and take up a lot of space. I like books with pictures. As they say, a good picture is worth a thousand words.

Back to my question. So what's so great about an e-book? Let's look at it from the author's point of view first.

I have a friend who has been thinking about writing a story book for months now. She's got the whole plot worked out. She's even thought about some illustrations. She went as far as entering her book into a competition, hoping that if she won, it would get her some prize money to fund the initial start-up, and provide free publicity. So what happened ? Well, the whole long-drawn process of finding a good illustrator, trying to get her some funding, being really busy with her usual life, and probably sheer inertia got in the way.

That's when I suggested she consider an writing an e-book instead. Here's why.

1. Writing a regular book and getting it published needs money. Not everyone has enough money to start the process going. It becomes worse when you consider the lag time between the publishing of your book and the time you see any money from the sale of your book. E-books need very minimal capital. There are programmes that help you get started at the fraction of the cost.

2. Finding a publisher that will publish your book. You could try to publish it yourself, but you'd have to pay for your own printing. Writing an e-book eliminates that problem. The internet will allow you an easy, cheap and quick way to get your book out.

3. You can publish the book the way you want to. Nobody edits bits out.

Sometimes people get so thrilled with the idea of writing that great story, they forget that great story can only be sold if people want to buy it and read it. It has nothing to do with how well you write. Great book but no traffic equals no sales. The key word here is MARKETING. As Robert Kiyosaki, the author of the best-selling book Rich Dad, Poor Dad pointed out, he wasn't the best WRITING author. Many people, he felt, could write better than him. He failed English in school. But their books weren't being snapped off the shelves like his were.

So why get round to writing an e-book, or any book at all ? There's the attraction of having financial independence and a passive income stream. You get the satisfaction and prestige of being an author.

Writing a book, e-book or not, is not just about having a great idea and putting it down on paper. It takes a lot more to turn it into a best-seller quickly and profitably.

In order to attain success as a writer of special feature articles, you must possess at least four qualifications:

(1) ability to find subjects that will interest the average man and woman, and to see the picturesque, romantic, and significant phases of these subjects;

(2) a sympathetic understanding of the lives and interests of the persons about whom and for whom he writes;

(3) thoroughness and accuracy in gathering material;

(4) skill to portray and to explain clearly, accurately, and attractively.

The much vaunted sense of news values commonly called a "nose for news," whether innate or acquired, is a prime requisite. Like the newspaper reporter, the writer of special articles must be able to recognize what at a given moment will interest the average reader. Like the reporter, also, you must know how much it will interest him. An alert, responsive attitude of mind toward everything that is going on in the world, and especially in that part of the world immediately around you, will reveal a host of subjects. By reading newspapers, magazines, and books, as well as by intercourse with persons of various classes, a writer keeps in contact with what people are thinking and talking about, in the world at large and in his own community. In this way you find subjects and also learn how to connect you subjects with events and movements of interest the country over.

Not only should you be quick to recognize a good subject; you must be able to see the attractive and significant aspects of it. You must understand which of its phases touch most closely the life and the interests of the average person for whom he is writing. He must look at things from "the other fellow's" point of view. A sympathetic insight into the lives of your readers is necessary for every writer who hopes to quicken his subject with vital interest.

The alert mental attitude that constantly focuses the writer's attention on the men and women around him has been called "human curiosity," which Arnold Bennett says "counts among the highest social virtues (as indifference counts among the basest defects), because it leads to the disclosure of the causes of character and temperament and thereby to a better understanding of the springs of human conduct". The importance of curiosity and of a keen sense of wonder has been emphasized as follows by Mr. John M. Siddall, editor of the American Magazine, who directed his advice to college students interested in the opportunities afforded by writing as a profession:

A journalist or writer must have consuming curiosity about other human beings - the most intense interest in their doings and motives and thoughts. It comes pretty near being the truth to say that a great journalist is a super-gossip - not about trivial things but about important things. Unless you have a ceaseless desire to learn what is going on in the heads of others, you won't be much of a journalist - for how can you write about others unless you know about others?

In journalism, men are needed who have a natural sense of wonder. . . . You must wonder at man's achievements, at man's stupidity, at his honesty, crookedness, courage, cowardice - at everything that is remarkable about him wherever and whenever it appears. If you haven't this sense of wonder, you will never write a novel or become a great reporter, because you simply won't see anything to write about. Men will be doing amazing things under your very eyes - and you won't even know it.

Ability to investigate a subject thoroughly, and to gather material accurately, is absolutely necessary for any writer who aims to do acceptable work. Careless, inaccurate writers are the bane of the magazine editor's life. Whenever mistakes appear in an article, readers are sure to write to the editor calling his attention to them. Moreover, the discovery of incorrect statements impairs the confidence of readers in the magazine. If there is reason to doubt the correctness of any data in an article, the editor takes pains to check over the facts carefully before publication. He is not inclined to accept work a second time from a writer who has once proved unreliable.

To interpret correctly the essential significance of data is as important as to record them accurately. Readers want to know the meaning of facts and figures, and it is the writer's mission to bring out this meaning. A sympathetic understanding of the persons who figure in your article is essential, not only to portray them accurately, but to give his story the necessary "human interest". To observe accurately, to feel keenly, and to interpret sympathetically and correctly whatever you undertake to write about, should be your constant aim as a writer.

Ability to write well enough to make the average person see as clearly, feel as keenly, and understand as well as he does himself the persons and things that he is portraying and explaining, is obviously the sine qua non of success. Ease, fluency, and originality of diction, either natural or acquired, the writer must possess if his work is to have distinction.

The Rape of Alma Mater - Book Review

It isn't often that a work of fiction can make me sit up and take notice. In the case of Wells Earl Draughon's "The Rape of Alma Mater" I have sat up and I feel like I have been sleeping throughout my entire life. The book is a must read for anyone who has concern for society's education, freedoms of speech and press and the ability to think for oneself. Of course this is a work of fiction, but it is written on the experience of the author as a graduate student during the timeframe of the book, as a demonstrator, and as a college faculty member.

In 1967 male students feared for their lives and enrolled in college to avoid the draft. The Vietnam War deeply affected the entire populace as students became increasingly concerned over how much say they had in their own futures. So they began to protest. They tasted power. This was democracy, wasn't it? The people have spoken. However, when the war ended and there no longer was a major cause for banding together and making change, they invented reasons to stand and protest. What resulted was a complete rape of the education system and eventually the press that covered it, the government that allowed it to happen for fear of not getting re-elected, and society as a whole.

Draughon's characters are so real that I feel as if I know them. Their inner turmoil is deep and torturous. Their maturation is obvious and satisfying as we follow 35 years of their lives. Through this time period we watch as things get so out of hand that even the original protestors are hoodwinked by their own propaganda. The plot flows so swiftly and surely as the reader becomes caught up in its waves and is quickly carried to the end of the book where one will sit thoughtfully for hopefully a good long while.

This book is highly recommended for those who ever wondered how things came to be in today's society, but even more so for those who never thought about it.

The Manas Epos - A Review

The Manas Epos: Across the Millennium by Sindhu J., Chennai: Emerald Publishers, 2005. pp. 86, HB. Price not given. ISBN 81-7966-147-4.

The resolution of the General Assembly of the UNO concerning celebration of anniversaries in 1994-1995 recognizes the Kyrgyz Manas epos as a "vitally important connecting link that supports and unites the peoples of the Middle Asia region all along their centuries old history." It also recognizes that this epos is "not only the source of Kyrgyz language and literature but also the basis of cultural, moral, historical, social and religious traditions of the Kyrgyz people" just as it favours "the dissemination of humane ideals and values of the humanity."

Sindhu J.'s book celebrates the millennium of the heroic epos, Manas, which is rightly called "a poetic history and encyclopedia of Kyrgyz people" (p.25). It seeks to contribute to international collaboration and mutual understanding (cf. p.79) besides elucidating more than a thousand years of Kyrgyz history, culture, humanism, spiritual values, and care for others (cf. pp.80-81).

She justifies writing The Mamas Epos: Across The Millennium on the ground that not much is known about the epic tradition of our Central Asia neighbours despite India's trade and cultural relations with them since antiquity. It is, therefore, culturally enhancing and academically rewarding to explore the Central Asia's riches "both independently and with reference to our own literatures". (pp.4-5).

Sindhu's book highlights various features, notions, ideas, customs and traditions of different epochs and centuries from ninth to eighteenth, including the wars against the Chinese and Uighur tribe, the advent of Islam and conversion of heathen communities to Islamic faith, the wars in Turkestan, the politics of Central Asia in the 17th century, the rise and control of Communism, and the life in Soviet era. It draws on the epos for a lot of historical data about different regions around Kyrgystan, its rivers and lakes, towns, ethnic life, local customs, rural economy, mineral resources, horses and camels etc. just as it points to the values which are most common for all people: social justice, honesty, humanism; love for homeland, national traditions, and customs; respect for human rights, national unity and tolerance; peaceful coexistence with neighbouring states; and people's aspirations and hopes for the better future. She celebrates Manas not only for the various aspects of Kyrgyz life in the past and now but also for the national pride of the Kyrgyz people after seventy years of Soviet rule (p.4).

Since Manas is essentially episodic and oral, with emphasis on immediacy of effect before a visible audience, its singers, called Manasci, (traditionally, jomokchu), have preserved in about two million verses (p11) the conventions of recitations just as they have kept alive over a thousand years old Kyrgyz mythological tales and traditions, woven round the feats and courage of Manas and his battle-friends in their struggle for national independence. The bards have also preserved the life and deeds of Semetey, son of Manas. Now, as the epic of human survival with props for "proper mental growth, balance and psychic health" (pp.3-4), its approximately sixty versions preserved in the manuscript form in the National Academy of Sciences in Kyrgystan, help to establish the Kyrgyz national identity. Sindhu's study, however, derives from over 250,000 verses of Manas as translated into English by Walter May (1995).

In ch.2, she reviews the Turkish epic tradition with a view to contextualizing the oral/written text of Manas and examining it geographically, historically and culturally to underscore the Kyrgyz search for identity.

The Kyrgyz epic is born out of the heroic efforts of Kyrgyz tribal lords who, in AD 840, successfully fought the Uigurs and destroyed their capital of Bei-tin. Praises of this victory form the core songs out of which the monumental epic finally emerges. It is a trilogy, a biographical cycle of three generations of heroes, i.e. Manas, his son Semetey, and grandson Seitek, in over 25,000 lines. The main episodes (i) in Manas (11170 lines) relate to: birth of Manas and his childhood, his first heroic deeds; his marriage to Kanikei; his military campaign against Beijing; and death of Manas, and destruction of his achievements. In Semetey, the second part (15017 lines), the main episodes deal with: Kanikei taking Semetey and fleeing to Bukhara; Semetey's childhood and his heroic deeds, his return to Talas; his marriage to Aichurok; his fight against Kongurbai; and his death (or mysterious disappearance). The episodes in the third part (9488 lines) relate to: destruction of Semetey's family, and capture of Aichuerok and Kulchoro; Seitek growing up; fighting against the internal enemies; Seitek's marriage: and his defeat of the external enemies and death.

The epic, a mixture of prose and poetry, appeals as an epic of Return, like the Odyssey or Aeneid, just as its oral performance (p.37) reveals a society which values poetry and music, and feasting and singing (p.35 and p.39), be it someone's birth, marriage, or death (p.50).

In ch.3, the Manas epos reflects a traditional patriarchy which values kinship and family. To be important and acceptable in a family, a woman must be skilled and resourceful. She must be a faithful wife, bear male children, be affectionate mother, look after the domestic chores and be a fighter in absence of her husband. Otherwise, her position would be lower than a slave's (pp.40-42). She would be beaten, disfigured, turned out into the street, or driven back to her relatives. The epos also reveals the importance of loyal horses and cattle, rather than money, in the rural economy of the nomadic tribes.

In ch.4, Sindhu describes the influence of Manas on various aspects of present day Kyrgyzstan. "Yurta-style of life" is still prevalent in art, architecture, and daily life (p.71). Older traditions still prevail in both rural and urban communities. "Krut" and "Kumyss" are still served at home and in hotels. "Hunting" as in the epic time is still in vogue with the same old tools. The best known Kyrgyz writers evince the same old lyrical quality (as in Manas) in their modern prose (p.75). Sindhu refers to several works of fiction published in 1960s and 1970s to point our the deeper influences of Manas.

She also finds several points of comparison between the Manas and the Indian classical epics such as the Mahabharata and Ramayana (p.83). She notes that the poems about Ilios and Odysseus have ceased to inspire heroic values among the Western people and lost their original dimensions as oral tales (pp.81-82) but the Kyrgyz and the Indian epics are still moulding the lives of their people (p.83).

The Manas Epos: Across the Millennium testifies to T.S. Eliot's statement about the pastness of the present and the timeliness of the past. The Manas epic is the first piece of Kyrgyz oral literature to be recorded and translated into other languages and is rightly viewed as an epitome of oral creativity. It continues to be sung with acting which is an ample proof of the Kyrgyz attachment to its past just as the millennium celebrations of Manas have received world-wide interest in Central Asia. Sindu J. deserves praise for familiarizing the Indian audience with the Kyrgyz epic.

There is no excuse now for having to "get up" to exercise! Renee Wiggins provides a simple solution to those of us that are bound to a chair in front of a computer, or for those that are not able to stand to do exercise. Furthermore, the exercises may be done on a plane, bus, or train. Renee proves that calories can be burned and muscles toned while sitting. What a wonderful concept!

Not much equipment is needed - only dumbbell weights, an exercise band, a mat, and a bottle of water. Renee provides an exercise calendar for a full month, e.g. Day 1: walk, treadmill, or bike; Day 2: stretching; Day 3: Biceps, Triceps; Day 4: Walk or bike and stretch. Each day is a variety so boredom of the repetition doesn't set in. Illustrations, photographs, and instructions are included. The best part of the photographs I liked was the fact they were of real women, slightly overweight, and not wearing cutzy exercise apparel.

Day 1 starts with making a commitment. The exercise for the day is walking for 30 minutes or 10,000 steps for the day. This is approximately 5 miles. The snack for the day is an apple. Day 2 is titled "Conversations with Self." Renee provides thoughts for contemplating, focus for the day being stretching and ending with a small banana for a snack. Her recommendation is to stretch after an aerobic workout or a hot bath. Renee tells us that warm muscles are more flexible. Each day Renee provides effective exercises, simple and encouraging, for better health and well being.

Although a small book, "Can I Exercise Sitting Down" is full of positive and effective ways those of us that prefer to sit during exercise could maintain our body. As with any exercise program healthy eating is a must. Renee provides a simple plan and tips to go along with the exercise regime.

Renee Wiggins is a certified personal trainer, licensed certified massage therapist, and a licensed dietitian. She shares her knowledge well with those that want to exercise their way to better health. This concise book is a must for anyone that is still on the "thinking" about an exercising routine, or promising oneself they "will start to exercise on Monday." Renee makes the whole ordeal simple and fun.

Since writing an eBook is actually not very difficult, why not take advantage of this media to promote your online business? You could have your first eBook outlined and ready to write in a very short time when you follow these suggestions.

1. List Your Favorite Memories

Sit down and recall a series of at least 10 of your favorite memories over the years. You will probably find that you have a book full of topics to write about. Don't let that overwhelm you. Cheap and Effective Ways to Promote Your Books

I thought it might be an idea to share here what I do to promote my books.

I like writing articles, so that's an easy way for me to promote. For example, I have a romantic comedy coming out shortly, so I've written an article entitled, 'Crafting the Romantic Comedy' and started circulating it at various article banks.

One article I wrote last year, just before the release of a romantic suspense novel, was entitled, "Seven Ways to Inject Suspense Into Your Novel". A couple of weeks later, I was amazed to see it as the lead article in The World Wide Freelance newsletter, which has a circulation of 20,000. As a knock on effect,
people contacted me after seeing the article via that newsletter and asked me to take part in live chats and interviews at their websites. They also asked my permission to publish the article as well.

I try to gear the promotional article up to suit the particular book coming out at that time and include a link to it in the bio.

You can probably find many more article banks by use of a search engine. Of course, if you can go the extra step and get your article published in a relevant magazine, so much the better. My husband has promoted my books both at the bowls club and at work and I've had several orders that way.

It's no secret that writing articles for the Internet is becoming a rather profitable activity, whether it be submitting to directories to bring traffic to your site or submitting to sites for direct payment. Unfortunately, not everybody knows how to go about writing articles for either avenue. This article will give you some article writing basics that will get you on your way to writing articles for whatever reason you choose.

The first thing you want to do when writing an article is try to pick a subject that you know something about. This is going to make things a lot easier. For one thing, you won't have to do as much research in order to write the article, if any at all. For another, writing about something you are familiar with will help the article sound more natural and conversational, which makes for more interesting reading.

The next thing you want to do when writing an article is decide on how you are going to approach the subject. A common mistake that people make is that they pick a topic like baseball, start talking about how the game started, then move into the rules and end up talking about their favorite players. They go from one sub topic to another with no real direction. These types of articles, for the most part, are not only maddening to try to read, but are rarely accepted by sites for either payment or even posting to their free directory. LET ME SHARE A PRAYER WITH YOU

This article is filled with a miraculous but humble story about how God is
faithful to those who love and serve Him. Matthew gives the one dollar he
needed for transport to a homeless man and the Lord uses a total stranger to
pay him back the money. The circumstances of how the dollar was paid back to
him have the hallmarks of the hand of God being involved. Though a humble
amount of money is involved in this story, the story still strikes a cord in
your spirit because it demonstrates how our Great and Mighty God still
reaches out and affects the lives of the little people. No matter how big
you are or how much money you have, God is with you and he is involved in
your life. This story is an inspiration to new believers especially, because
it shows them although they are only new members of God's family and may
feel insignificant, it doesn't matter because God will still answer their
prayers and perform miracles for them if they do His will.

I've been a Christian for two years now and this story inspired me because
it shows that God will perform miracles for me, regardless of how long I've
been a Christian for. God doesn't care how long someone has been a Christian
for or how much money they have to sow into the gospel, Gods looks upon a
mans heart, and if your heart is in the right place God will perform a
miracle for you just like he did with Matthew. Matthew may not be a rich man
but he gives what he can and God does miracles to make sure he is
reimbursed.

"No good thing will He withhold from them that walk uprightly" (Psalm 84:11)

This particular verse relates to the article because Matthews testimony of
how the dollar was paid back to him, illustrates how Gods word is fulfilled.
Matthew walked uprightly in the righteousness of Christ and didn't deny a
Homeless man a drink, Jesus said to give to them in need and when Matthew
did Gods will and walked uprightly, God didn't withhold the money he needed.
This article showed me that God is the master of the universe and He gives
and He takes away.

CAN DIVORCE HAVE A SILVER LINING?

This article paints the picture of a man's amazing journey through life on
earth and life in the spirit realm. God often lets Satan attack us and makes
us suffer so we will draw nearer to Him. In the Bible Job lost his family,
his house, his money and he even developed an illness that made painful
boils appear on his skin, yet he kept trusting and praising God. This story
shows me how Matthew is like a modern day Job and it really puts the book of
Job into perspective. Matthew has lost his family, his family home, his
former life and he has developed a serious mental illness, but he still
keeps praising God and trusting Him just like Job did!

"It is good for me that I have been afflicted; that I might learn thy
statutes"

Matthew has certainly been harshly afflicted through the loss of his family,
and the pangs of emotional pain have tormented him for a longtime. Although
from a shallow perspective it seems like a hopeless situation for him and
that he lost the fight, if you look through the eyes of Christ you can see
that it is a hopeful situation and that his life bears all the hallmarks of
a Prophet. Although it seems like he has lost the fight, he has not lost the
war, he may have lost a battle but he certainly hasn't lost the war. The war
is against Satan who attacks Gods children but God uses evil for good.
Although God let Satan afflict Matthew it was a blessing in disguise because
it made Matthew learn thy statutes, and it drew him closer to God than
anyone could ever imagine.

A diamond is deep underground for many years while covered in dirt and
darkness. The diamond sits underground buried in a seemingly infinite amount
of dirt in absolute darkness. Many years later a miner begins mining for
that diamond, and he dig's underground and searches for that valuable
diamond through all the dirt, mud and darkness. Finally when the miner
discovers the diamond he cleans off the mud and dirt and polishes it so it
shines like the treasure it is. Matthew is like a diamond, although he has
been in darkness and feels dirty from his prostitute addiction, God still
loves him and values him as the diamond he truly is. God is like that miner
and no matter how dirty Matthew gets he will still be that shining diamond
to God, if he ever gets dirty again, God will just give him another polish
and clean. You cannot change what you are.

Matthew was below the ground and in the darkness for a long time, but an
ordinary rock cannot form into a diamond unless it's deep underground for a
long period of time. Matthew has been underground for a long time after his
wife left him, but while he has been underground he has turned into a
diamond and is no longer an ordinary rock. No ordinary rock can ever
transform into a diamond unless it's buried in dirt for many years.

Matthew has been buried in dirt for many years just as this article
illustrates, but it has turned him into a diamond that shines and reflects
Gods light, just as a diamond reflects the blinding light of the sun.

Any Christian or Non-Christian who has experienced a harsh divorce that
broke their heart, or feels God hates them and is ruining there life should
read this article. This article will show you there is light at the end of
the tunnel.

JESUS HEALS LEGION, DRAMATIZED STORY OF "MY NAME IS LEGION," HE REPLIED,
MARK 5:1-20

This article paints a clear picture of what happened when Jesus healed the
demon possessed man and the circumstances around this story in the bible. I
felt although I had been taken back in time when reading this article, and I
could see Jesus bring comfort to a man who was possessed by demons and
hearing their nasty voices. The apostles wrote the gospels many years after
Jesus died, and it was the Holy Spirit that revealed to them what Jesus did
and said during his ministry. I feel this dramatized story of "my name is
legion" was also inspired by the Holy Spirit and Matthew wrote this story as
the Holy Spirit revealed all the details to him.

The story gives us an expanded version of what happened when Jesus healed
the possessed man, it also gives us some details about who the possessed man
was and how Jesus changed his life. This article also showed me that many
mentally ill people who roam the streets talking to voices and yelling at
the sky are actually demon possessed, and do not have problems with their
brain, but they have spiritual problems with demons. This story shows us
that Jesus Christ is the answer to mental illness and that Jesus can heal
this virus of Satan affecting so many people's minds today.

This article is like a time machine that takes you back in time so you can
see the pain the demon possessed man was going through, and how his pain was
healed by The Prince of Peace. When reading this article I saw Jesus come to
the possessed man like the loving Saviour that he is and heal him with his
love and powerful spirit. This article will bring you closer to Jesus and it
will give you compassion on people with mental illness. Jesus loves all
people, including mentally ill people and we must pray for these people just
like Jesus did.

HOW TO BUILD YOUR HOUSE UPON THE ROCK FROM MATTHEW 7:24-27

This article shows us that to enter into the Kingdom of Heaven and following
Jesus requires us to be born again of the spirit and to bear fruit. In
Matthew 7, Jesus tells us to build our house upon the rock so we do not fall
when the wind and rain comes, because if we build on the sand we will
collapse and be taken away by the flood. Following Jesus requires us to obey
Him by giving to those that are in need, feeding those who are hungry and
not showing partiality because someone is a drug addict or drunk. We are to
treat everyone equally, because one day a heroin addict who spent all his
money on drugs but is starving might approach you for some money to buy
food, if you deny him come judgment day Jesus will cast you to His left hand
side and label you a goat as it says in Matthew 25. When you ask Jesus why
He says you're a goat he will answer you, "I was that heroin addict, who
begged you for food, and I was hungry but you called me swine and you would
not feed me."

Jesus said to enter the Kingdom of Heaven we must be born again of the
spirit. In 2 Corinthians 5:17 it says "Therefore if any man be in Christ, he
is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold all things are become
new." If we are born again we should be new creatures in Christ, who love
and help all those in need without showing partiality. Being a Christian is
about living those words Jesus spoke and not just listening to them in
church, we need to be doers of the word and not just hearers deceiving our
own selves. We can worship Jesus all we like in church with our lips and
mouths, but if we are not doing what Jesus said by giving to all those in
need, our hearts are far from Him. Our hearts need to be close to Jesus,
because if our hearts are far from Him while we vainly worship Him with our
mouths and lips in church we are in danger of being cast aside as goats, and
we will never be the sheep who will have the honour of becoming apart of His
heavenly flock. Sheep will make it into Heaven but the goats will not make
it in.

A goat is someone who worships Jesus with their mouth and lips but whose
heart is far from Him. A goat will worship Jesus with his mouth in church
but will not obey Jesus. A sheep will not only worship Jesus with his mouth,
but will mean it in his heart but doing all that Jesus commanded, and giving
to all those in need without showing partiality.

WHY DO THEY CALL ME LORD, LORD? LUKE 6:46

Jesus clearly said that many would say to Him on judgment day "Lord, Lord
didn't we cast out demons and do many wonders in your name." And then Jesus
would say to them, "Depart from me I never knew you." In this controversial
yet revealing article, Matthew shows that calling Jesus Lord and attending a
church service once a week is not enough to make it to Heaven. This article
is controversial and thought provoking, but one cannot underestimate the
potency of Jesus words when he said, in that day He would say "Depart from
me I never knew you!"

Many people are going to tell Jesus they know Him on judgment day, and he's
going to say that He never knew them. If you want to find out about how to

BEING BIPOLAR AND A PROPHETIC CHRISTIAN

Matthew does suffer from mental illness and in this article he describes
this illness from a personal perspective, probably better than any medical
professional ever could. Matthew exposes how mental illness is a spiritual
issue, and mental illness is a spiritual deformity or spiritual issue the
patient has and not something carnal or biological. Bipolar is a complex
thing to have, it causes people to have high's and lows at extreme levels
and Matthew explains here, how sometimes the highs of Bipolar can sometimes
exceed the pleasure of any drug. Its clear the man writing this article has
a deep spiritual problem that the mental health professionals cannot
address, Matthew does hear from God, but he also hears from demons and this
is a spiritual issue that medical professionals have been conditioned to
deny.

The Prophets in the Old and New Testament heard voices regularly, in the New
Testament Paul saw a bright light and heard the voice of Jesus talking to
him after he fell off the horse, if you told this story to a Psychiatrist
they'd probably say that Paul is schizophrenic and hears voices (auditory
hallucinations). There is more to mental health patients than meets the eye.
Matthew is an exceptional case and he understands his mental illness is a
spiritual problem at its roots, it does have some negative aspects to it,
but it also has some major advantages, because Matthew can hear very clear
in the spirit and he often gets monumental and amazing prophecies off God,
which confounds any learned theology professor or pastor.

PRAISE AND WORSHIP, SO WHAT IS TRUE WORSHIP THAT GOD WANTS, READ THIS FROM
MATTHEW 4:10

This article shows us how to worship God and walk in His spirit, going to
church once a week is not worshipping and living for God. Buying more
expensive worldly items for vanities sake while neglecting to sow into the
Kingdom of God, is a spit in Gods face. It's also spitting in Gods face when
you don't use your money to be a good Samaritan and help the poor. It's a
disgrace to God when so much money is wasted on flash cars and extravagant
houses, which are only purchased in vanity to satisfy a rich mans ego; this
money should be used to get a homeless person somewhere to stay, or to buy
bibles that can be sent to China as there are 60 million Christians in China
with no bible.

This article shockingly shows us that most people going to church once a
week in the west are not serving God with their heart. People in the West
seem to worship God with their mouths and lips, but their hearts are far
from Him. Most Christians in the West seem to be hearers of the word only
and not doers, deceiving their own selves. Jesus said to love the Lord your
God with all your heart, mind and soul and He said to love your neighbour as
yourself. In this article it displays how many Christians are breaking the
law of loving their neighbour as themselves on a regular basis; because they
are too busy indulging in the lust of the world as they satisfy the appetite
of their vanity.

Exposition is the descriptive material that sets a tone to a piece of writing and introduces the background, the characters, and other facts. Exposition is better used in non-fiction, but the need for it can be crucial to the success of a story also.

Exposition in fiction contains necessary elements like time, setting, and background for the story. More than the exposition alone, what is inside it or the information in it is what helps the plot to take off.

A century ago, many novels included long expository pages. Authors like Henry James used long expository passages and narratives without dialogue. In contrast, what is expected from fiction writers of today is continuous energy. Readers expect their interests held on every sentence and section of a story.

In a recent book review, an experienced reviewer said, "Too much exposition mars first half of an otherwise engaging read." In the stage play Urine Town a girl is stopped from telling too much, since "Nothing can kill a show like too much exposition."
Expositions are sometimes calls info dumps, especially if they are offered in extended mind-numbing paragraphs. Most readers skip them and read the story's action and dialogue, or they drop reading the story altogether.

Still, some narration and exposition can still be very important to the modern-day story, as in Dan Brown's The Da Vinci Code. Could Dan Brown have entered his narrative passages in an easier-to-swallow form? Possibly, but then he would have to write three or four books instead of one, and his readers would not be able to grasp the significance of the backstory in The Da Vinci Code.

On the other hand, what is written as exposition can be incorporated into the story's action and dialogue, most of the time. When exposition becomes awkward by delaying the action in the present and it doesn't advance the plot and yet the information in it is important to introduce a scene or paint a picture, it is better if it is kept confined to a few sentences.

Let's say a sunset is important to explain a certain mood. A writer may write as exposition: As the sun set, the pale blue sky turned into a grey threatening smoke. The fire of the sun, raging against departure, left the entire horizon in its reddish hue while the rest of the world was getting immersed in shadows. The birds flew back to their nests and all was quiet.
Or the writer might incorporate the same exposition into the action of the story as: Simone hurried inside the house when the sun set, turning the pale blue sky into a grey threatening smoke.
"Hi, Peter," she called as she rushed through the living room to close an open window. The world was getting immersed in shadows while the sun raged against retreat and left a reddish hue on the horizon. "Where did you disappear, Peter?" Simone called out loud. The birds had flown back to their nests and all was quiet, but where was Peter?

Interior monologue is another way to blend the exposition into the story. Using the same exposition, the writer may use the interior monologue as: Simone made a tent with her fingertips and gazed at the setting sun that had already turned the sky into a grey threatening smoke. Did Peter need to disappear, too? On the horizon the sun was raging against retreat leaving the entire horizon in its reddish hue. Peter had shown no rage whatsoever. Soon the birds would flow back to their nests and all would be quiet, but she would continue missing Peter.

Another method of putting exposition into a story is by way of one character lecturing another one, as Sherlock Holmes did when he explained his mode of crime solving, starting with, "Elementary, my dear Watson…" In some brusquely written work, villains make speeches about their actions and plans to helpless victims. Maybe because of that, these speeches are called idiot lectures.

Whether exposition is blended into the action of the story or is used alone, the trick is to incorporate it wisely inside the story and not bore the reader with long tedious passages.

There is a DVD called: "The Secret" which has been in the news for months. I love books!

I have read a lot of different titles in my life. I started with a series of books about "The Famous Five" by Enid Blyton. As I grew up I got more interested in personal development, psychology, cognitive science and the human mind.

For several years my goal was to read at least one personal development book every week. These were both business and personal growth titles.

One day about six months ago I suddenly realized that my reading had decreased dramatically. I didn't read anything at all!

Why?

Well, the simple answer was that I didn't have the time or to be more accurate; I didn't prioritize the reading. On my bedside table was "Pilgrimage" by Paulo Coelho, still unfinished after several weeks.

Then a friend of mine mentioned downloadable audio books.

I wasn't that excited. I wanted to hold the book in my hands, keep the finished book in my bookcase, check for interesting chapters later and...

Ok, "I understand," said my friend, "but you just told me you didn't have the time to read."

So, I downloaded my first audio book. It felt safe to choose Paolo Coelho and now I chose one of my favorites: "The Alchemist." As I had read this book it was interesting to compare the audio book with the original.

I was totally blown away! This was exactly what I wanted. I suddenly realized that I could resume my old reading habits, or maybe I should say book consumption habits of one book a week. Maybe I even could increase this habit.

After a while I developed my own routines of how to listen to audio books most effectively. I listened while exercising and both my mind and body got trained. I listened while commuting and also when I was traveling. These were situations that didn't demand any big thinking from me. But there was another really interesting discovery I made, read on.

I could use audio books in situations that really required my total focus; Audio books that helped me in problem solving and with my creativity. This is a technique that uses sound to stimulate the creative mind pattern in your own brainwaves. This might sound a bit strange but I tried and found that somehow these audio books really helped me. I always use them when I write articles, news releases and web content. I also use them in situations when I try to think out of the box.

One other great thing about downloadable audio books is that I can get my book instantly and 24/7. It's almost like having your own library at home.

To summarize my experience with audio books so far, I have to say that I am grateful for these new technologies. I got back one of my main interests, books. I found tools that help me in my daily life, "Creative Mind System." I also found a way to be more effective as I could listen to audio books while doing other less productive tasks.

I love audio books!

The Street Lawyer - Book Review

It might seem an odd choice to review a book coming up ten years old, but this has been sitting on my shelf gathering dust, and as it is the only Grisham book I haven't read, I decided to dip into it while I waited for the new Lee Child to come out. I'm glad I did.

It tells the story of Michael Brock, Corporate Lawyer earning big bucks, pretty wife, fast lane to partner status and millionairedom. Everything is rosy until an odd incident occurs. A vagrant, a street dweller hijacks the lawyers in their tower-block office and before he can make clear his demands, special-forces blow him away. The vagrant's brains are splashed over Brock's face. It changes his outlook on life, but then it would.

He begins to take an interest in the homeless, he resigns his cushy job and big bucks, loses his wife, and takes on pro bono unpaid legal work on behalf of the street people, and that is just the beginning of his journey.

This book concentrates attention on homeless people in American inner cities. Whether their plight has greatly changed in the intervening ten years I have no idea, but my guess is things haven't altered that much.

As always with Mister Grisham's books the narrative rushes along. I was never tempted to duck any pages and it is all too easy to see why he has shifted so many copies of his books over the years. I liked this one a lot. It was thought provoking, retained my attention throughout, and though I kind of guessed the ending long before I actually arrived there, I was never disappointed.

If you like Grisham, you will like this. If you don't like Grisham you will probably still like it. Definitely recommended.

Coincidentally this very day John Grisham was in London to collect a lifetime achievement award for among other things, selling over 250 million books. Incredibly he stated he had never won an award before. Perhaps writers should be more valued by us all, and feted too.

Book Review - "Reality TV and You - Being the Director of Your Life's Reality"

I recently read the book "Reality TV & You – 8 Secrets to Being the DIRECTOR in Your Life's Reality TV Show Using the Law of Attraction" by author, Kathy Perry (www.realitytvandyou.com). I was struck by the simplicity of the metaphor that Kathy used in explaining such a complex subject. Although this type of information has been available to us throughout the ages, I was amazed at how she condensed it into a book featuring easy to understand, every day language with a "How to" companion workbook.

The title is deceptive. This book is not about reality TV shows, which you'd have to imprison me to watch, and then I'd hide under a pillow and wear ear plugs.

The book focuses on using reality TV as a metaphor for our lives. Kathy indicates, if our life is reading more like a bad script for a Reality TV Show, we can change it by changing our thoughts and emotions. Kathy illustrates that our emotions are like the channels on the television set. We are in control of our emotions through the remote control, as long as we are holding our own remote and no one is pushing our buttons, and we aren't pushing someone else's buttons. Emotions play a very important role in what we are attracting into our lives. Kathy makes the point well . . . if we are continuously changing emotional channels, we are starting and stopping the flow of the things that we want in our lives and the same old stuff we don't want keeps showing up. The book and companion workbook has a series of exercises to get readers to take a close look at their lives and work through rewriting those areas that are not in alignment with what they really want.

Kathy shares many of her own personal experiences throughout the book which gives it a very personal touch and helps connect you with the material. She has done a great job in the practical application of her topic by adding the companion workbook, which contains step by step "How to" instructions.

I applaud Kathy for throwing her hat into the crowded self-help/personal development arena. She has provided a book and an enjoyable workbook that not only helps people understand a complex subject like the Law of Attraction, but shows them how to apply it in their lives.

Look for more wisdom from Kathy in the future. She recognizes the importance of self-awareness and self responsibility and has much valuable information to share.

Pee Wee's Family In a Nutshell (ISBN# 0969788320) is the third installment in the series of children's books written by Larraine Roulston. The series is based on the character Pee Wee Worman – who teaches readers about vermiculture, or composting with worms. Larraine shares a powerful quote from Charles Darwin on the inside cover followed by a statement on the next page where the author makes it clear that she sees compost as "more then a fertilizer, more than a soil conditioner – it is a symbol of continuing life".
